The Daintree Rain Forest

HI KIDS!!!!

Today was our second full day in Australia!! We are having a wonderful time, we had a new adventure. We went to the Daintree Rain Forest. We met our guide George, he is an Aboriginal from Cairns. He was funny, but SUPER intelligent man. (He didn't go to college but is so knowledgeable you couldn't tell and he knew WAY more than I think both Ali J. and I will ever know to together, ha).

We started off on a bus tour to the water hole (It was the Mossman River, I hope that was the correct spelling) were we got to swim in fresh water and it was AMAZING. Then we got back on the bus and go the Wild Life Sanctuary were we got to pet some Emus and Kangaroos! We will try to post pictures later.

Then we headed on a walk into the Daintree Rain Forest were we learned tons of information on the trees, spiders, birds, insects and lizards. We then headed up to Cape Tribulation were ate lunch and George made us some wonderful bread to try.

From there we headed down to the Daintree River where we met this 1 year old crocodile. He is enjoying some fish for dinner. It was scary but cool to be on a boat in a river that was INVESTED with huge and tiny crocodiles. I (Alli T.) learned that Bull Sharks and Crocs live side by side and rarely fight for territorial dominance. (Something I have been wondering about since watching River Monsters on Animal Planet.) Courtney Bauder - Project Coordinator

G'day Mates...My name is Courtney Bauder and I am leading this group of students to Australia this January. I am very excited because this is our fifth year working on this project. I am a teacher at UW Oshkosh and I love to travel. I have been lucky enough to travel all over the world. I have worked with children when I lived and taught in China, Japan, and Germany and have traveled all over Europe, east Africa, southern Asia, and central America, and I love to make friends with people from different cultures. For the last 5 years we have traveled to Australia and worked with your school and this year I am hoping that we can all learn about this wonderful place 'Down Under' again! John Botsford - UW Oshkosh

I am a returning student at UW Oshkosh, who is changing professions. I have gone back to school at the grand age of 63. I am the eldest in a family of six which has five boys and one girl. I am in the human services leadership program at the UW. Upon completing this program I would like to work with veterans, who are returning from the war in the Middle East. I have three daughters Kristine Marie, Elizabeth Rose, and Mary Sarah, two stepdaughters Susan and Sandy, two step sons Scott and Todd. I love skating, skiing, diving, and grandkids. Their names are Jordan, Dominic, Tristan, Tyler, Winter Rose, Donovan, Richard, Becky, Jared, Justin, Elizabeth, Travis, Christopher, Valerie, Austin, Emily, Lauren, Aaron, and one to be born in February, and finally four step great-grandchildren. I am excited about going to Australia for my interim classes. I will finally see Australia which I have been wanting to see since 1974.

Emmy Marvin - UW Oshkosh

My name is Emmy Marvin. I am 22 years old, and I graduated from Berlin High School in 2008 (which is 1 hour and 47 minutes southwest from Mishicot). I am a senior at UW- Oshkosh, and I am studying Human Services Leadership and Communication. I will be graduating in May, and I can't wait! After I graduate, I am going to get my Master's degree in school counseling, so I will be doing the same things as your Guidance Counselor. Right now, I work in a nursing home as a Certified Nursing Assistant. If I could be anything I wanted when I “grow up” I would be a professional singer and tour the world (maybe even make a stop in Mishicot)! I love playing and watching sports (especially the Packers). I also enjoy reading, running, singing, and outdoor activities like hunting and fishing. I am so excited to be going to Australia and sharing all of our adventures with each of you!

Meredith Manion - UW Oshkosh

Hey kids! My name is Meredith and I am a junior at UW-Oshkosh. I am majoring in journalism but really considering the idea of becoming a wedding planner instead. In my free time I enjoy shopping, spending time with friends and family, traveling to new places, and playing with my cat Jasmine. I am so excited to spend three weeks in Australia away from all the snow and cold weather in Wisconsin. I look forward to the adventure of experiencing a new culture and all the great recreational experiences Australia offers.

Kayla Oberstadt - UW Oshkosh

Hey folks! I’m a senior at UW-Oshkosh and will graduate in May of 2012 with a degree in Human Services Leadership and a minor in sociology. I am extremely involved in campus organizations and am the President of Collegiate 4-H as well as being a captain on the UWO Track & Field Team. After graduating, I look forward to a future as a 4-H Youth Development Agent or working with other youth programs. I am so excited to travel back to Australia for my second visit while in college, it is an unbelievable place- which is why I had to come back again!

Trecia Coleman - UW Oshkosh

Hi everyone! My name is Trecia Coleman and I am 23 years old. I'm a sophomore, studying Community Education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I enjoy reading, playing volleyball, and kickboxing. I am excited about going to Australia because I have never been out of the country and it will be interesting to see how people live on the other side of the world! I look forward to surfing, scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef, and taking as many pictures as possible. I'm glad we have the opportunity to share this experience with all of you!

Alexia Child - UW Oshkosh

Hello everyone. My name is Alexia Child. I am a senior at UW Oshkosh. I will be graduating Oshkosh with a human service major and sociology minor. This just means I love working with people and understanding human social activity. Sports are a really big part of my life. I will be going into my four year as a thrower on Track and Field team at UW Oshkosh. My passion is throwing really heavy objects and far as I can. I am counting down the days until we leave for Australia. This will be my first time leaving the country. It will be so interesting to be immersed in a culture different from my own.

Shannon Seidel - UW Oshkosh

Hello everyone, my name is Shannon Seidel. I am a senior at the University of Oshkosh, majoring in Early Childhood and Special Needs Education. I love working with young children and individuals with disabilities. I love music and have learned to play guitar although I do not have as much time to play as I would like. It seems I have always wanted to go to Australia, so I’m very excited to finally get my chance. It’s a bonus that we will be going when it’s summer there. I will not miss all the cold and ice while I’m gone. I am looking forward to experiencing all that the people and the land of Australia has to offer. I cannot wait until see my first kangaroo. I’m also especially anxious to explore the Great Barrier Reef and the Sydney Opera House. I can hardly wait until we leave and know I will have a lot of fun sharing our Australian adventure with your class.

Alli Thompson - UW Oshkosh

Hello everyone!! My name is Alli Thompson and I am a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. I am currently workings towards majoring in Human Services and a minor in History. I enjoy the outdoors and history so I am excited to learn more about the history of Australia while I am there. I am also excited about traveling to Australia during their summer and to get out of Wisconsin’s bitter cold winter. This will be my first time ever flying across an ocean but I am excited to experience a new area of the world. I am interested in finding out all about the culture in the ‘land down under’. I cannot wait to share our experiences with you!
