Yarabar

Hi Kids,
Today we went to Yarabar, which is an Aboriginal community outside of Cairns. We were welcomed by 4 young boys by many differernt welcome dances. They even taught us how to do one! That was alot of fun! We then were able to learn more about their community and culture by touring a museum. The museum had many explanations of artifacts and told the story of the Yarabar people. After that we did a walk through in the forest and learned more about how they use the plants for medicinal purposes and other uses. One example our guide showed us was how to use a certain type of leaf to make a cup. Then a man showed us how they throw spears. A few members of the group tried it out themselves. We also saw examples of Aboriginal art such as paintings and pottery. Then we got the chance to paint our own pictures to bring home with us!

We got back to the place we are staying at and went for a swim and relax a bit. It is now dinner time and we are going to the night market to enjoy food and a little shopping!

Have a great day!
Kelsey and Lisa
